The beratement in itself is a paradigm of the oppression taking place between those in the position of power and their antitheses, or so called “the lesser men”. The subordinate position is immediately imposed on Mickey, who is subject to the tyranny of Pete, his boss. There is hardly any democracy at work for Mickey because the primary concern of Pete is productivity, profit and public perception.

The absence of control underpins the sense that only outside of work hours does Mickey find his freedom, but this is hardly the case. The social conditions under which Mickey is living act as the very vessel for class inequality. From healthcare and education to housing and recreation, life outside of work is not that different for Mickey, as he has to keep coming back to be reprimanded harshly just to afford the luxury of feeding his dog, or engaging in a relationship with his girlfriend.

Now come to think of it, I think I’ve just perpetuated capitalism for $12, eventually entrapping underprivileged Mickey in an unending shackle of oppression in a happy little Tshirt from Uniqlo. LMAO.
