Previously unpublished, polished prose up to 8,000 words is accepted year round. The editors especially seek tightly woven short works under 2,000 words and short-shorts around 500 words; simultaneous submissions are allowed but multiple submissions are not.

The Gertrude Stein Award accepts English-language stories year round, including previously published stories published after January 1, 2011. No minimum word count; each story requires separate submission and payment. First prize is $1,000 and publication.

Polished creative nonfiction and essays up to 8,000 words are accepted year round. Preferences favor shorter works under 1,500 words with an arts and culture focus; subjects include politics, cultural and feminist critiques, science, medicine, nature, interviews, literary journalism, and experimental nonfiction.
