Open to: Work must have been published within the last year outside the US, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia, unless it is by an Indigenous writer in those regions; submitters must be writers, editors, or translators eligible to submit the work.

Global Spotlights accepts previously published fiction, including short stories, novel excerpts, and hybrid texts, from magazines, zines, and independent publishers. Works should be 3,000–7,000 words, published within the last year, and submitted by the writer, editor, or translator with rights-holder information; response is aimed for within eight weeks. The work must be from outside the specified Western regions, unless by an Indigenous writer in those regions.

Open for one unpublished story or novel excerpt of 2,000–7,000 words; translations are welcome when publication rights can be conveyed. Flash fiction, serialized longer works, email submissions, and hard-copy submissions are not accepted.

Open general submissions for original, unpublished journalism/reportage, essays, memoir, criticism, and argument of 2,500 words or more; pitches, interviews, and book reviews are not accepted. Response is aimed for within 6 or so months.

Completed interviews are accepted; pitches are not. Submit the full interview with an introduction and explain in the cover letter why it suits Guernica readers.

Open for up to five original, unpublished poems in one submission; only one poetry submission may be active at a time. Translations may have appeared elsewhere, but not in English.

Global Spotlights seeks 1,200–2,500-word reviews of recently published or forthcoming fiction and nonfiction books, with a strong personal voice and broader historical or cultural context. The deadline was July 1, 2026, at 11:59 PM GMT; response is aimed for within eight weeks, and the honorarium is payable upon publication.
