The 40th anniversary contest accepts entries in any genre from October 11-17, 2026, or until 250 submissions are received. Entries must be 40 words maximum; submissions are free. The winner receives an HFR tote bag or beret and issue, and the runner-up receives a bumper sticker or issue.
Open to: Translators must secure the rights to translate the submitted work.
Translation submissions are open year-round. Submit works translated into English from any non-English language, including the original text and translation; submit up to 6 poems or micro-fictions, or one essay or story. Translators must secure translation rights.
Book reviews and interviews are considered from September through April by email; include the book title, a brief summary, and other relevant information. If there is no response within two months, HFR is at capacity and cannot take on the book.
