Open to: Current Helen Zell Writers’ Program faculty and students, graduates from the past three years, the judge’s close friends, relatives and current or former students from the past three years, and MQR staff, editorial board, and immediate family are barred.

The 2027 Jesmyn Ward Fiction Prize accepts one unpublished short story up to 7,000 words; the prize is $2,000 and publication. The page lists an ending fee but no readable closing date.

MQR Online accepts pitches and submissions year-round for book reviews, essays, arts and culture features, author interviews, and other feature genres; selected pitches are invited to submit a full piece up to 3,000 words.
