Fiction is accepted September 15 through October 31 for the Doris Betts Fiction Prize competition; the winner receives $250 and a full scholarship, with finalists considered for publication and receiving $250 honoraria. Contest results are announced within 4 months of the deadline.

One-act plays are welcome year-round unless related to a special feature topic, in which case they must meet that feature’s August 31 preceding-year deadline; unrelated plays should be submitted to North Carolina Miscellany, or to Flashbacks if related to a past feature.

Creative nonfiction is accepted January 15 through March 1 for the Alex Albright Creative Nonfiction Prize competition; the winner receives at least $250 of $1000 prize funding and publication, and finalists are considered for publication and receive honoraria.
