Submission calls
Accepts one short fiction piece at a time, 1,200–6,000 words. Genre writing is welcome when supported by strong prose, though hard science fiction, high fantasy, and tawdry romance are discouraged.
Accepts up to three flash fiction pieces per submission, each 1,200 words or less; pieces are evaluated and published in a dedicated flash-fiction section.
Memoir and personal essay submissions may contain up to 6,000 words. Journalistic works, criticism, commentary, and substantially researched texts should use Cultural Critique instead.
Cultural commentary or critique may be casual or academic in style, address US or non-US culture, and contain up to 8,000 words; memoir and personal essay belong in their separate category.
Accepts up to five poems totaling no more than ten pages; complex enjambment and indentation are welcome when reasonable for web typesetting.
The Blurred Genre summer special edition welcomes hybrid, genre-blurring, and experimental work, including flash nonfiction, visual sci-fi poetry, memoir comics, mixed-media fiction collage, and cultural critique. Send one unpublished piece of 3,000 words or less or up to ten pages of graphic media; submissions open May 1 to June 1.
