Short fiction should emphasize elegance in voice, structure, and characterisation; genre fiction such as science fiction and fantasy is generally not published, and flash fiction is not accepted. Stories must be no more than 4,000 words, with one story per submission. Free submissions are accepted January, March, May, July, September, and November; submissions outside those windows cost £3.50. During live prize periods, fiction submissions may be closed.

Accepts finished essays and pitches for essays, reviews, and interviews. Essays may be lyric, memoir, personal, reportage, criticism, or features; academic essays and reviews are not accepted as essay submissions. Finished essays have no set length but tend to be under 4,000 words; nonfiction pitches typically propose 2,000–5,000 words, while review pitches should be no longer than 2,000 words. Free submissions are accepted January, March, May, July, September, and November; submissions outside those windows cost £3.50. Pitches are sent by email and aim for a response within a month.

Poetry should demonstrate commitment to the ultra-specificities of language. Submit no more than five poems per submission, with each poem no longer than 50 lines.
