Open to: Emerging writers only; writers with single-author book-length work published or under contract with a major press are ineligible. International submissions are allowed if primarily in English; no translations. Friends, family, and associates of the guest judge and past Novel Excerpt Contest winners are ineligible.

The 2026 Novel Excerpt Contest accepts unpublished novel excerpts under 6,000 words, with no genre limitations but a primary interest in literary fiction. Submissions are open September 1 through November 8, 2026; the deadline is 11:59 p.m. PST on November 8. Every entrant receives a response by the end of March 2027.
