The Walrus publishes 8–10 original short stories annually by new or established Canadian writers. Stories may be on any subject and should be 2,000–5,000 words. The fiction inbox is open January 1–February 28 and June 1–July 31; submissions outside these periods are not considered.
The Walrus accepts pitches for reported features, long-form journalism, timely essays, and arts-and-culture pieces. Features are 1,200–2,000 words or 2,500–5,000 words for long-form journalism; essays are 1,000–4,000 words. Short essays around 1,000 words start at $500, while long-form reported features pay up to $1 per word.
The Walrus publishes work by new and established Canadian poets. Poems should fit in a single half-page column; no more than six poems may be submitted every three months, and previously published work is not considered.
