Fantasy fiction is accepted for middle grade protagonists aged 8–12 (1,000–10,000 words; sweet spot 2,500–5,000), YA protagonists aged 12–18 or new adult (1,000–20,000 words; sweet spot 2,500–10,000), and general audiences, usually with adult protagonists (1,000–13,000 words; sweet spot 6,000–7,000). Stories must fit an available issue theme, be family-friendly, character-driven, unpublished, and human-created; simultaneous submissions and reprints are not accepted.

Beginning with the January 2027 issue, middle grade and YA science fiction is accepted. Middle grade stories are for protagonists aged 8–12 and run 1,000–10,000 words; YA stories are for protagonists aged 12–18 or new adult and run 1,000–20,000 words. Stories must fit an available issue theme and remain family-friendly, character-driven, unpublished, and human-created.
