Features are pitched by email to Rebecca Gransden at [email protected]. Interviews are taken more often than reviews, and reviews are rarely assigned to in-house editors.

Short stories of 2,000-7,500 words; submissions open on the 1st of each month and close when the monthly cap is reached. Every other month, submissions are limited to people who have not previously submitted short stories to X-R-A-Y. The preferred range is 2,000-4,000 words, and the category targets a 4-6 week response time.

Flash fiction of 300-2,000 words; submissions open on the 1st of each month and close when the monthly cap is reached. The preferred range is 750-1,200 words, and the category targets a 4-8 week response time.

Micro fiction submissions open on the 21st of each month and close when the monthly cap is reached. Submit one to three pieces, each no more than 300 words, in one document; micros may be fiction, nonfiction, or beyond, with a 1-4 week response target.

Creative nonfiction of 300-7,500 words; submissions open on the 1st of each month and close when the monthly cap is reached. Preferred ranges are 750-1,200 and 4,000-6,000 words, with a 4-6 week response target.
